We are currently in the process of converting all lighting in our hotels to LED lighting.

Nearly 2,500,000 pieces of plastic amenities are used every year at JR-West Hotels—including toothbrushes, hairbrushes, and disposable razors—producing about 35 tons of waste. We are currently working to further reduce our dependence on plastic bath amenities and other products, such as by switching to environmentally-friendly amenities.

  • Guest room amenities and cutlery
By changing major guest room amenities to products made from biomass materials and recycled materials, JR-West Hotels has reduced the amount of plastic it uses by about 70% compared to conventional products.

  • As part of its efforts to comply with the Plastic Resource Circulation Act, as of April 1, 2022, JR-West Hotels asks guests to reuse toothbrushes, hairbrushes, disposable razors, and shower caps during their stay.
  • Guests are encouraged to let staff know at check-in or at any time during their stay if they need a replacement toothbrush, hairbrush, or disposable razor. At its Hotel Vischio locations, JR-West Hotels asks guests to select required items from the Amenity Bar on the lobby floor.
  • Straws
In cooperation with Kaneka Corporation, each JR-West Hotels location has introduced straws made of Green Planet*, a biodegradable biopolymer developed by Kaneka and made from salad oil and other cooking oil waste from JR-West Hotels restaurants.
    * KANEKA Biodegradable Polymer Green Planet™ is a polymer produced from vegetable oil and other biomass through microbial fermentation. Natural microorganisms found in seawater and soil biodegrade the material to eventually become carbon dioxide gas and water, helping to reduce CO2 emissions and protect the global environment.
  • Drinking water in guest rooms
JR-West Hotels is moving from conventional plastic bottles to paper cartons for the natural water provided at certain locations. Installation of water dispensers is also being considered for new hotels.

  • We have begun limiting the number of available guest room floors during non-peak seasons to curb CO2 emissions.
  • As of June 2022, CO2 Zero MICE has been adopted at seven hotels with event and meeting spaces, offering renewable energy for the electricity used at venues and reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions to virtually zero. In September 2023, JR-West Hotels also began offering reservations for special accommodation plans that allow guests to offset the equivalent amount of CO2 emissions generated throughout their stay.

We are currently in the process of installing water-saving toilets in guest rooms and employee areas.
